Air Deccan to get Airbus

Bangalore-based Air Deccan is all set to jolt the airline industry again!
Buoyed up by the success it has achieved with its six small aircraft, Air Deccan plans to expand further by acquiring Airbus A 320s for the long distance grand trunk routes.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Air Deccan’s Managing Director Captain G R Gopinath said, “The Airbus will be inducted into our fleet by the end of June or in the first week of July.” These A 320s, which will seat 180 passengers in an all-economy layout, is likely to give Air Deccan an edge over other major players as they would operate from the ‘low fare-little frills’ plank. These Airbus jets will link Bangalore with large metros such as Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

What will make these airbus services an instant hit among travellers are its fare, Capt Gopinath said and added, “the fares will be just 20 per cent more than that of a first class train fare. However, it will be 30 to 40 per cent lower than that of other airliners.” Quite optimistic of future, Capt Gopinath said so far a total of 1.75 lakh people have travelled by Air Deccan’s six ATR 42 turboprops from Bangalore to regional cities in South India. About 1,700 - 1,800 persons travel every day by Air Deccan, which has operationalised 44 flights.

“Now we plan to use the A 320s on the grand routes and the ATR 42s on shorter routes,” he said.

On what makes Air Deccan believe that travellers would take to its A 320s, Capt Gopinath said, “people are more concerned about travelling from one point to another safely, quickly and economically. Not many travellers are interested in frills and fancy foods. We are trying to make flying more affordable for the middle-class by cutting down expenditure on things that are really unwanted.”
On the traveller-wooing strategies adopted by the airliner, Capt Gopinath said, “we have introduced E-ticketing by which one can take a print out of the ticket and later produce it at the airport counter to get the boarding pass. This saves time in booking tickets.”

The airliner has set up a 24-hour call centre with a toll-free number to answer queries and for purchasing tickets, Capt Gopinath added.
